We love the legend behind this leap year tradition. Back in the day, February 29th was ignored and had no legal status and many reasoned that since this was the case, women could abandon the custom which stated only men could propose marriage. The first documentation of the practice dates back to 1288 when Scotland supposedly passed a law that allowed women to propose marriage only on this day. Tradition stated that any man who declined must pay a fine which ranged from a simple kiss to a silk dress! Another myth suggested that St Bridget, back in the 5th century, complained to St Patrick that it was unfair that women should have to wait for men to propose. St Patrick, after much haggling, agreed that women could have one day every four years to ask men to marry them. Legend states St Bridget was so excited that she got down on one knee and asked St Patrick to marry her! He refused and gave her a traditional consolation gift instead.

And if you’ve already secured your bride or groom to be, popping to the wedding fayre this Sunday is the perfect excuse to look around one the most magical wedding venues in Yorkshire.
