All of that tinkering about led to a Silversmiths degree at Sheffield University. And for his final graduation exhibition in Islington, London, Iain produced a tea set designed and made around the concept of spheres which was immediately snapped up by Bienvenida Buck, who went on to commission him further with some bespoke pieces of jewellery.
This vote of confidence in his abilities and the financial injection prompted Iain to launch his own collection of jewellery, Iain Henderson Designs Ltd., which was sold through a variety of independent retailers, nationwide. In addition, Iain undertook commissions for engagement rings through to bespoke cufflinks.
However, over time, Iain became increasingly frustrated with the lack of service and advice that customers buying his jewellery through those retailers received.
“I was creating a lot of bespoke pieces independently and I loved working with the customer, being able to give them different options to suit their budget, or offer them the benefit of my expertise in the design or making. There are no limitations really, but I was finding that the retailers weren’t giving customers as much information as I felt they should.”
“I decided that there had to be another way. If I could offer customers all of my knowledge, advise them on the possibilities, help them create what they wanted within their budget, let them be involved in the process and do it all in a more comfortable environment than the high street, then perhaps just perhaps, this would prove successful.”
