Once up on a time, us fellas had little choice but to wear a wide yellow gold ring or perhaps a signet. How times have changed – Yellow gold probably only counts for about 5% of our sales now with one of the biggest reasons today being cost. Generally speaking, the groom’s wedding ring is wider and therefore heavier leading to a bigger price tag!
White metal has been dominant in men’s wedding ring jewellery for a number of years now however, we tend to advise against white gold. If you didn’t already know, white gold consists of yellow gold mixed with palladium to try and give a whiter appearance but actually it’s more of a very pale yellow. So, to make its appearance whiter, it goes on to be rhodium plated, a fine coating which wears quickly. To keep it looking pristine you would, on average, have it re-plated 4 times a year (at £30 a pop over its lifespan you could be looking in excess of £3000!)
Now, don’t get us wrong, we do use 18ct white gold when customers ask us to (having had all of this info). But, where we like to use it is in its natural pale yellow form. It’s lovely, it’s unique and it forms part of the metals on offer in our union collection.
If white metal really is your thing our recommendation would be platinum or palladium, even titanium! Obviously, platinum is the daddy of all metals and comes with a premium price tag attached to it. Here’s an example of an average gents ring (6mm flat band) and how the costs stack up:
|Titanium||Palladium||Platinum||18ct Yellow Gold||18ct White Gold|
|6mm flat band||£300||£600||£899||£760||£903|
Not only are we seeing men spending more money on their wedding rings, but they are more elaborate than ever. Most grooms come and see us with a very simple ring in mind by the time they’ve tried on a few designs, seen how the rings are made, had a chat with us; their creative juices are in full flow, pairing rose gold with platinum and zirconium! Black diamonds are proving popular as well as engraving on the inside or outside of the ring (you’ll never forget your anniversary!) there are options to suit every taste and budget. We have seen a big increase in a matt finish and don’t forget if you get your rings from us we offer to re-finish/polish them every year free of charge, so if you change your mind from a matt finish to a polished finish then no problem, we can do this for you! You can even get your own handwriting or finger prints engraved on your rings, (now that’s what we call being under the thumb!)
The options are endless, allowing for something truly individual and unique. Our union collection combines simple clean lines with an array of design features which allow you to create and design your own unique wedding ring. Now how many high streets can offer you this design service?
Titanium is really very popular now due to its hardwearing and strong characteristics – a good choice for those working with their hands, sportsmen, gardeners and so on – and all at a very reasonable cost! (from £300.00)
We’d love to help you fellas choose a ring that’s right for you.
